Recent Works at the Hallward Gallery, Dublin 2005 |

Artist’s Statement This exhibition follows on from my show in Kilmainham Gaol the same year. Although I would say that I was primarily an abstract painter, with a particular interest in the emotive qualities of colour, the Kilmainham project allowed me to experiment with lighting and with space, and to work with new materials including metals and fabrics. In my work for the Hallward Gallery show, I continued with this development, incorporating metal grids into the canvases and investigating the possibilities of shadows in the work. In some cases the metal is painted, becoming an integral part of the work, and the shadows cast by the metal brings a new structure to the painted field. The mood is calmer, more meditative, the grids evoking curtains or veils, both revealing and concealing... Whereas the Kilmainham show explored major issues relating to personal and political history the new work continued the exploration of memory but at a more intimate level. The works were inspired by old childhood haunts, the back garden in Ranelagh, the apple tree, local parks etc. I also returned to that favourite motif of mine, Newgrange. |
